regionDetail.overview

Hawaii consists of eight main islands — Oahu, Maui, Hawaii (Big Island), Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe — plus 124 smaller islands and atolls forming a 1,500-mile chain across the Central Pacific. The state was the 50th to join the United States (1959) and remains the only US state in the tropics, the only state located entirely in the Pacific Ocean, and the only state with a native language other than English (Hawaiian) co-official. Hawaii was the Kingdom of Hawaii until 1893, when a US-backed coup overthrew Queen Liliuokalani — a history that shapes Hawaiian culture and identity to this day.

Best things to do in Pacific Islands (Hawaii)

1

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

The Big Island's national park encompasses two active volcanoes — Kilauea (one of the world's most active) and Mauna Loa (the world's largest). The Chain of Craters Road descends through multiple lava fields to the coast. Viewing active lava flows (when conditions allow) is one of the world's most primal geological experiences. Admission $35/vehicle.

2

Road to Hana, Maui

The 64-mile journey along Maui's northeastern coast — 600 curves and 59 bridges through rainforest, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and farm stands selling fresh banana bread. Start very early (before 7am) to beat traffic and arrive at Oheo Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) before crowds.

3

Na Pali Coast, Kauai

The 16-mile stretch of Kauai's northwestern coast features sheer green sea cliffs rising 3,000 feet from the ocean — inaccessible by road but approachable by kayak (summer only), boat tour, or helicopter. The Kalalau Trail hikes 11 miles along the cliff base, one of the most dramatic and challenging hikes in Hawaii.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended Period

April to June, September to November — Hawaii is a year-round destination but spring and fall avoid the peak summer crowds and the wettest winter months. North Shore surfing season (November-February) is spectacular for spectators but the waves are too large to swim. Summer brings large family crowds and highest prices but calm, swimmable water on all islands.

Food & Specialties

Hawaiian cuisine is a remarkable multicultural synthesis — Native Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Portuguese, and American influences producing a food culture unlike anywhere else.

Poke bowl — fresh raw fish (ahi tuna, salmon) marinated in soy sauce and sesame oil, served over rice with toppings. Hawaii's greatest contribution to modern American food culture.

Plate lunch — the quintessential local meal: two scoops white rice, macaroni salad, and a protein (chicken katsu, kalua pork, or loco moco). Hawaiian fast food culture at its most satisfying.

Shave ice — ultra-fine ice (far finer than snow cones) soaked in tropical syrups. Matsumoto's on the North Shore is legendary.

Malasadas — Portuguese doughnuts, deep-fried and sugar-coated. Leonard's Bakery in Honolulu has made them since 1952.

Laulau — traditional Hawaiian pork and fish wrapped in taro leaves and slow-steamed.

Saimin — Hawaii's local noodle soup — a fusion of Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino noodle traditions.

Getting There

How to reach Pacific Islands (Hawaii)

By Air

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu is the main gateway — 5-6 hours from Los Angeles, 9-10 hours from New York. Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and United provide the most mainland connections. Direct flights operate from Tokyo, Sydney, Vancouver, and other Pacific cities. Inter-island flights between Oahu, Maui, Big Island, and Kauai take 30-45 minutes with Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest Airlines.

By Train

No rail service. Air is the only option.

By Bus

No mainland bus service. Inter-island travel is by air or occasional ferry.

Getting Around

Each island requires a rental car for full exploration — public buses exist on Oahu (TheBus, $3/ride) but are slow for touring. Maui, Big Island, and Kauai are car-dependent. Waikiki and downtown Honolulu are walkable. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) operates on Oahu and Maui. Bicycles and e-scooters work well within beach resort areas. Inter-island travel is by short-hop flight (Hawaiian Airlines has the most routes) or the Maui-Lanai ferry.

Accommodation

Where to stay in Pacific Islands (Hawaii)

$

Budget

Hostel dorms from $50-80/night. Budget hotels in Honolulu from $150-220/night — Hawaii has very little budget accommodation outside of hostels.

$$

Mid-Range

Mid-range hotels and condo rentals $200-450/night. Maui and Kauai resorts are generally more expensive than Oahu.

$$$

Luxury

Luxury resorts from $600-4,000+/night. Four Seasons Hualalai and Maui resorts are among the most exclusive in America. Kauai's St. Regis Princeville offers world-class luxury.

Safety

Hawaii is one of the safest states in the US by crime statistics. The primary safety concerns are ocean-related — strong currents, shore break, and rip tides kill several visitors annually. Always check beach conditions and heed warning signs and flags. Volcanic activity on the Big Island can cause vog (volcanic smog) affecting air quality. Flash floods can occur in Hawaii's mountains — check weather before hiking. Sun protection is essential in Hawaii's tropical latitude.

Travel Tips

Insider advice for Pacific Islands (Hawaii)

  • 1Book inter-island flights early — Hawaiian Airlines prices increase as travel approaches.
  • 2Timed-entry reservations are required for Haleakala sunrise viewing and many popular Maui sites — book well in advance.
  • 3Never turn your back on the ocean — waves can appear suddenly from seemingly calm water. Heed beach safety flags.
  • 4Apply reef-safe sunscreen — Hawaii has banned certain chemical sunscreen compounds to protect coral reefs.
  • 5A Hawaiian greeting of 'aloha' means both hello and goodbye; 'mahalo' means thank you. Locals genuinely appreciate visitors who use these words.
